The Mental Health and Nutrition Department
“Does diet help prevent mental health conditions?” and, “Are nutrition interventions helpful in the treatment of these mental health conditions (mental disorders)?” and, is it true that “food is medicine?”
Mental health is a sensitive aspect in human life as it associates with an individual’s mind, cognition, thoughts, moods, and behaviours.
In relation to nutrition, mental health and good state of the brain is strengthened by proper diet and balanced intake of nutrients into the body. The brain requires good nutrients and appropriate diet to maintain the cell structures for stable development.
This affects the way an individual relates to others, cope with mental health conditions such as but not limited to anxiety, autism, bipolar disorder, dementia, depression, stress, drug and/or alcohol problems, eating disorders, learning disabilities, personality disorders, schizophrenia and making decisions.
In this aspect, it is important to understand what kind of foods to eat regularly, and what kind of foods to eat in appropriate time, together with the frequency and consistency; this helps to maintain mental health conditions/ disorders
Hence, nutrition has a major role in promoting mental health as it involves provision of a balanced diet, proper nutrients, and appropriate food choices for elevation of mental health.
